Hi Julia,

Last Friday Alice and I tried your Sea Bass in Parchment recipe with the fresh Calico Bass that Alice had caught a couple of days before, and the results were fantastic!  

It was the first time we made fish in parchment paper, and the fish turned out to be tender, juicy, and delicious.  The citrus watercress salad was a great compliment to the fish as it was light and refreshing.  We were initially concerned that the not-so-sweet oranges would ruin the dressing but were pleasantly surprised that, when mixed with the other ingredients, it was perfect with the fish.

The recipe was easy to make, the dinner was healthy, and thank you, Julia.

I made your salmon appetizer last night and shared it with friends at a dinner party.  Toasted some baguette in a little olive oil … yum!  We all loved it!  I make a salmon mousse often, so this was a nice change — love the fresh tarragon with the salmon.  I’ve given your website to a few friends as well as my sister … they should be signing up soon if they haven’t already.  Keep the emails coming … enjoying your kitchen tips and recipes.

I planned to take the book with me to my summer home, where I have time to have friends over for meals.

I finally had two people for dinner last night and did your poached salmon in Court Bouillon.  (SO great to be able to do all of that the day before!) and the Tatziki sauce.

Salad Joy by Julia Marshall has become my favorite “go to” cookery book! Actually, it isn’t a “cookery book”…because you hardly have to cook anything! Love that! The book has so many healthy, easy to prepare, mouth-watering recipes that cater to my special man and me who enjoy eating salads and keeping fit and staying health conscious.

The book is just splendid – hand’s down the nicest cookery book you will have in your collection. The spiral bound, glossy thick pages filled with large color photos, simple ingredient lists and I really appreciate the easy to follow instructions that are highlighted in a different color so you don’t lose your place while preparing are a 10+ in my opinion. I like how the book can be propped up in your kitchen when preparing because it stands up by itself or can easily lean it against your toaster w/out the pages turning or it falling over. Julia has definitely outdone herself with simple to follow and easy to prepare delicious, healthy recipes….even if you’re drinking a glass or two of wine and chatting away with friends while preparing!!

I picked the Grilled Skirt Steak recipe for dinner guests who I know liked “steak and potatoes” and basic ingredients. This recipe definitely “raises the bar” to an ordinary steak and potato meal however. The delicious horseradish sauce (I adore horseradish and decided to double up on the prepared horseradish – we all devoured it and our napkins came in handy to wipe away the tears) was easy to prepare and I served it just as the picture showed in the book. The heirloom tomatoes really add to the final presentation with nice color and added flavor and texture to the meal.

This recipe will be on the top of my list to serve to guests. It took me only 20 minutes in the kitchen to whip it up – I really like that.

For Mother’s Day I am preparing the Cold Poached Salmon salad – it looks fantastic and perfect for all the Mothers in my family coming over for brunch on Sunday. Thank you Julia! -- Angela Slater, Solvang, CA


My husband Randy and I have had the great pleasure and experience of Julia's amazing culinary creations. Whether she hosts and cooks for our families or hosts a small dinner party we are always in for a special treat. Julia prepared one of our favorite meals, the "Macadamia Nut Crusted Halibut"  which is not only so flavorful, the presentation is so beautiful we felt as if just had dinner at a Five Star restaurant. Julia, I decided I needed a pasta salad with this hot weather so I tried your tangy chicken Pasta salad. Oh my, it was sooooo good. It did make a lot but between my husband and my grandson, who always manages to look in the refrigerator for something good to eat when he comes over, we ate it up in a couple days. The only thing I did differently, and it worked out fine, is I cooked the bacon on top of the onion in the microwave and it just turned out wonderfully. Great recipe! I have been lucky enough to be on the receiving end of Julia's cooking many times.  And...she is a true wizard (wizardess?) in the kitchen.  Her meals are always fresh, interesting, and most importantly, deeeeelish!  Often I am the only vegetarian in the crowd and Julia always concocts 'my' version of what she is preparing by leaving the meaty bits out and adding something veggie in.  The last time my luck held out and Julia made me dinner, we had the "Thai Shrimp" and instead of grilled shrimp, Julia grilled tofu -- it was the best Thai food I've had in a long time (and I live a quarter mile away from Thai Town in Hollywood!)  I am so excited to have her recipes all in one place now, instead of me bugging her each and every time I have the good fortune to have a place at her table and want to know how to recreate what I just ate... -- Krista Eulberg, Hollywood CA


I’m not a cook but I love salads and fresh delicious food so it is with delight that I follow Julia’s weekly email tips, blog, and gorgeous how-to cookbook Salad Joy.  The interesting factoids on how to store lettuces, freezing nuts, the truth behind Canola oil, and all the easy to follow instructions for beautiful entrees inspire me with confidence.  

Julia’s passion and culinary knowledge honed over many years of gracious entertaining and home cooking shine through in wonderful short video diaries I always enjoy.

Having just returned from a great sailing trip, I’m especially excited to follow the new “Cooking Aboard” series. No small feat - and I know Julia is an experienced pro.

Julia and John invited my parents and me over for dinner when they were here from Sweden for the holidays. It was such an incredible meal! The Sea Bass in Parchment (from Salad Joy) was absolutely delicious, my dad a seasoned chef who is extremely critical, had to agree. The meal was so light and fresh we all felt great indulging in a very impressive dessert table. My two favorites were Julia's homemade chocolate cake and her watermelon sorbet....delicious!

Another time I was a last-minute guest at Julia’s for dinner and Julia made Sesame Orange Chicken (one of my favorite recipes in Salad Joy.)  I loved that she used orange juice in the marinade and the dressing, as well as using fresh oranges in the salad it made it extra tasty, not to sweet and at the same time very refreshing! That's exactly how Julia always does it last minute dinner, quick snack or big formal meal: fresh, delicious, inspiring flavors, well balanced and everybody loves it!! I'm very lucky that I have the honor to enjoy her cooking so much!

I'm one of those people who love to read cookbooks to fantasize about the delicious meals I could be making! But with Julia's Salad Joy, it's not just fantasy -- these are doable dishes that are delicious and surprisingly easy, considering how gourmet they taste! I've been lucky enough to enjoy a meal prepared by Julia at her home, and it was a breath of fresh air for me, like a retreat getaway. The little touches of the serving plates she chooses, the timing of the food, the combination of flavors...that goes far beyond mere "recipes". Julia has so many simple tips and tricks that make a meal so special.
